Why? What does this really mean for her? What would it mean for you?
For a moment, just think about the actual act of getting baptized. You place your hands on the pastor's arm, and you allow yourself to be plunged completely under the water and then raised back up. What is your task? Your task is to inhale. Hold your breath! Here you go! Inhale.
This is the most cleansing breath you'll ever take. As you descend into that pool of redemption, you are washed clean of the smudges of sin that have marred you. Then, as you rise again into open air, you are launched into a refreshing new existence. The air around you is cleaner now, filled with the Holy Spirit you have embraced. You may not feel any different, everything around you will still look and act the same. This moment is between you and your Heavenly Father--and I imagine there is a huge grin on His face and He is dabbing at the moisture in his eyes. Your relationship has just taken on a deeper, more meaningful dimension.
Baptism is a symbol of our choice to be united with Christ. The Bible tells us that when we take this step, we are joined together into one body -one Spirit - with Christ and His church. (1 Corinthians 12:13) We have publicly accepted forgiveness and affirmed our faith in Him as our Redeemer. We are new creatures. We have made the most important, the most life-changing choice a person can ever make. We have inhaled.
"Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life." ~Romans 6:3,4
